Clause-by-Clause: What Changes from 2015 to 2026
Clause 3 — Terms and Definitions
The 2026 version is very simple to use the terms and definitions. Instead of repeating the large number of definitions, it focuses more on the ISO 9001 for the common quality management and the terminology.
Clause 4 — Context of the Organization
- Climate change: The Climate change is now included directly in ISO 9001:2026. This requirement was first added to the ISO 9001:2015 from the 2024 amendment. Every organization needs to consider whether climate change is relevant to their business as well as the QMS.
- Interested parties: Organizations should also consider whether the customers, regulators, suppliers, employees or other organisations interested parties have climate-related expectations or not.
Clause 5 — Leadership
Quality culture and ethics: This is one of the main changes for making a stronger focus on the quality culture and also the ethical behaviour.
Quality policy: The quality policy also should have a clear connection with the organization’s context and expected direction. It should support what the organization is trying to achieve.
Clause 6 — Planning
- Risks and opportunities: ISO 9001:2026 gives clear attention to the risks and opportunities. Organizations should identify the major problems and take action to reduce them.
- Business disruptions: Planning is also considered how the organization can continue and how to meet the requirements during and also after also.
- Managing changes: When making the changes to the QMS, organizations should consider how the change will work, and also communicate it to the right people, and review the results after implementation.
Clause 7 — Support
- Organizational knowledge: Organizations need to make sure that important knowledge is not lost.
- Employee awareness: Employees should understand the organization’s quality expectations, and also include its quality culture and approach to ethical behaviour.
- Documented information: The words around the documented information have become more consistent. Which mainly improves the clarity rather than creating a completely new and the basic documentation is required.
Clause 8 — Operation
- Customer communication: The basic customer communication is required, but the 2026 version gives more attention for communicating with the relevant occurrence and the arrangements to the customers.
- External suppliers: Organizations should look beyond the basic product or service that specifies when controlling the suppliers.
- Overall: Clause 8 remains largely similar to the 2015 version, with the main operational approach and continuing to focus on the controlled and the effective processes.
Clause 9 — Performance Evaluation
There are no major structural changes to monitor and the measurement, internal audits or management review. Organizations will continue to regularly monitor the QMS performance, conduct internal audits and review the system through management review.
Clause 10 — Improvement
The main approach remains the same. Organizations still need to deal with nonconformities, take corrective action and continually improve the QMS.
Annex A
Annex A has been expanded to provide more explanation and the practical guidance on the requirements, terminology and the concepts that are being used in ISO 9001:2026.
Annex B
Annex B has been removed from the 2026 edition. The 2015 version included the information about the other ISO/TC 176 quality-management standards, but this information is no longer included as an annex in ISO 9001:2026.
What Did Not Change (Despite Speculation)
- 10-clause structure: The same 10-clause structure continues.
