SON, NiNAS and Certification Bodies: Who Does What in Nigeria
Three kinds of organisation are involved, and they are often confused.
- SON (Standards Organisation of Nigeria): the national standards body and Nigeria’s member body at ISO. It develops Nigerian standards and runs product conformity programmes such as SONCAP and MANCAP.
- NiNAS (Nigeria National Accreditation System): the national accreditation body. It assesses certification bodies, laboratories and inspection bodies. Since October 2025 it has been an IAF MLA signatory, which supports international recognition of certificates from NiNAS-accredited bodies.
- Certification bodies: independent organisations that audit you and issue the ISO certificate. Always ask to see their accreditation scope for your standard and sector.

Where ISO Certificates Are Requested in Nigeria
- Oil, gas and energy services: operator vendor prequalification and the NCDMB Nigerian Content qualification process assess quality and HSE. ISO 9001, 45001 and 14001 are commonly asked for, depending on the operator and the service category.
- Banking, fintech and telecoms: supplier onboarding often asks for ISO 27001 or equivalent controls. ISO 27001 supports, but does not guarantee, compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.
- Federal and state procurement: evaluation criteria under the Public Procurement Act 2007 vary by agency and tender, and ISO certificates are often requested or scored for quality-critical categories. Read each tender document.
- Food and agro-export: EU, UK and Gulf buyers audit suppliers. NAFDAC registration is separate from ISO certification.
